Ancalagon the Black and others in the War of Wrath and Smaug in the Battle of Five Armies, but if you include single combat as a battle then Glaurung v. Turin at the Crossings of Teiglin and Scatha v. Fram.

NightKnight 01-07-2006 04:38 AM

Yeah, good enough for me. :)

Lindolirian 01-07-2006 05:14 PM

In the days of which Steward of Gondor did three great fleets (long prepared) come up from Umbar and Harad?

Gil-Galad 01-07-2006 06:54 PM

Echthelion II?

Lindolirian 01-07-2006 08:29 PM

Nope.

Elu Ancalime 01-07-2006 08:36 PM

Wasnt it....Beren?
________
Vapir Oxygen

Lindolirian 01-08-2006 12:05 AM

Indeed it was. :)

Nilpaurion Felagund 02-15-2006 05:11 AM

*pokes*

Elu Ancalime?

I know it's past 10 days, but I'll give you a chance to take this thread.

Groin Redbeard 11-30-2007 03:08 PM

I'm trying to revive this thread

If any of you guys out there want to play you're more then welcomed to join.

I'll get this thread started off with a new question
In which battle did Thorin, son of Thrain, gain his nickname.

Legate of Amon Lanc 11-30-2007 03:14 PM

Groin, you are soon going to find out that you should not have done that.

Battle of Azanulbizar. He used oaken branch to defend himself when he lost his shield there.

Groin Redbeard 11-30-2007 04:46 PM

Rats! I'm always screwing up!

I checked, and this thread has been stagnant since 2006, and the rules say anyone can post a new question.

By the way, you got it right, Legate!:)

Groin Redbeard 11-30-2007 04:56 PM

Oh dang! That question was already asked. Now that's what I call screwing up.

I don't think that's what Legate meant...

Don't worry about it.

Groin Redbeard 11-30-2007 09:37 PM

Oh man, now I get!:D

Legate of Amon Lanc 12-01-2007 05:03 AM

:D

Let's try this: Someone decided to stand with certain faction in a certain battle because of the sympathies with their leader and also because he could easily retreat if he stood with this faction.
My questions:
Who?
In what battle?
With what faction did he side?

Folwren 12-01-2007 11:31 AM

Who? Brodda, Ulfing Chieftan.
In what battle? Battle of Unnumbered Tears
With what faction did he side? Morgoth and his followers.

Brodda, in sympathy with his leader, Uldor the son of Ulfang, sided with Morgoth and his minions against the elves and other free people's of Middle Earth.

Only thing I dont know about is the easy to retreat bit.

Legate of Amon Lanc 12-01-2007 12:12 PM

And that is very important. Sorry, not correct answer.

But it really isn't very hard, trust me :)

Gil-Galad 12-01-2007 02:03 PM

Who? Turgon of Gondolin
In what battle? Battle of Unnumbered Tears(i beleive)
With what faction did he side? with his brothers.

Turgon remained passive for awhile, during this battle he chose to come out but in the rearguard, when the battle turned he easily retreated back into Gondolin.

Legate of Amon Lanc 12-01-2007 02:10 PM

Nope. Though your reasoning is very good, Gil. But I can maybe add that the person, though one of the named reasons was the possibility of an easy retreat, did not in the end use this possibility, i.e. did not retreat.

Gil-Galad 12-01-2007 02:18 PM

Who? Maeglin
What battle? Fall of Gondolin
What faction? Army of Morgoth

Maeglin sided with them so he could obtain his passion, and with Gondolin surrounded he could easily escape if he allied them, but alas he was cast over the side of the walls to his death.

Legate of Amon Lanc 12-01-2007 03:39 PM

Still not the right one. :)

Nerwen 12-02-2007 06:54 AM

I know! I know!

Who? Bilbo Baggins.
In what battle? The Battle of Five Armies.
With what faction did he side? The Elves of Mirkwood.

Am I right or am right?:D

Legate of Amon Lanc 12-02-2007 07:08 AM

Good, Nerwen. You are right, of course (and maybe you are even right).

The high ideals of First Age were nice, but you can all see, it was far simpler :)

Please continue the thread, Nerwen.

Nerwen 12-03-2007 07:59 AM

Here's a nice easy one::)

On what hill was Denethor slain?

Gil-Galad 12-03-2007 01:00 PM

Amon Ereb during the first battle.

Nerwen 12-03-2007 06:30 PM

Yep.

Please take the thread, Gil.

Gil-Galad 12-03-2007 10:40 PM

What battle did the South win in the North?

semi-tricksy...

Legate of Amon Lanc 12-04-2007 10:51 AM

Not the last battle against the WK, i.e. Fornost, by chance? The Gondorians won there, although they were in Arnor.

nope.

i'm surprised legate, i figured you would have known it not to be that easy.

Legate of Amon Lanc 12-04-2007 04:14 PM

At least once :D You can be happy. Hmm... that's very vague, could be many things in that case.

But what about the Battle of the Camp, where the Easterling Wainriders were defeated? It took place in the North Ithilien, while the (later victorious) Gondorians came from the South.

it was too easy anyways... and it was Battle of the Camp.

It wasn't. I had to look it up :D

Okay, so what to post? What about this:

There are many battles commemorated among the defenders of the West (and Beleriand). Once in a while some Gondorian Steward or Elven Lord could rise up at the table and say "Today, we commemorate the 1000th anniversary of the Battle of ..." But what about the other side? Did the followers of the (Great) Enemy commemorate these things? We don't know. But what we know is that they remembered them. And we know of at least one such an event that was remembered under different name than in the Western World. Now what I want from you is to give me that name.

The Might 12-05-2007 09:29 AM

Well, all I can think about is the conversation between Gorbag and Shagrat.
Let me get the quote.
Ok, here it is:

Quote:

There's no grief in that; but think-there's someone loose hereabouts as is more dangerous than any other damned rebel that ever walked since the bad old times, since the Great Siege. Something has slipped.'
So the Orcs refer to the Siege of Barad-dûr as the Great Siege.

Legate of Amon Lanc 12-05-2007 09:35 AM

Nice, nice! Good, Anakin, goood! Kill him! I mean, well done! :D That was what I meant - please take the thread.

The Might 12-05-2007 09:55 AM

Before what battle did Sauron send some of his followers to incite others to attack?

Legate of Amon Lanc 12-05-2007 10:05 AM

I thought about Nirnaeth, but I'm not sure if it was really Sauron.

The Might 12-05-2007 10:15 AM

No, not what I am looking for.

Groin Redbeard 12-05-2007 12:03 PM

Is it the Battle of the Field of Celebrant?

The Might 12-05-2007 12:40 PM

Nope
I would like a little explanation too, not only trying out all the battles.

Nerwen 12-10-2007 12:30 AM

Please, Might! Give us a clue!
