And thats the correct answer Sir, Would you mind trying the TT: Quote game as well? before I run out of puns...
And England lost..
How I hoped they'd win.

The Squatter of Amon Rûdh 06-27-2004 04:06 AM

More returnething

Ah, but you forgot the rule: they never get past the quarter finals. I might pop into the other game today. We'll see.

Returning to the Return:

This is a thing of worth beyond your reckoning

Sleepy Ranger 06-27-2004 04:13 AM

Something says its Sauron to Pippin in the Palantir, but something inside my brain says its Merry to Sandyman..
so is it any of the two? :D

Well theres always Netehrlands & Greece :) :D

The Squatter of Amon Rûdh 06-28-2004 03:06 AM

Try again

Actually it's neither of those. This one isn't as simple as it looks.

Sleepy Ranger 06-28-2004 09:09 AM

Ladies & Gentlemen I hate to say it but I have been defeated and that sort of stuff. I've got a crazy notion but I guess its just a crazy notion and since my books aren't with me(I'm starting to wonder if they really are mine.), I can't try it out.
So with any hopes perhaps a hint or something like that would be in order.
And with any luck I may not yet have been beaten. :)
We need more of these kind of quotes. :)

The Squatter of Amon Rûdh 06-29-2004 05:14 AM

Bump...

There have only been two guesses, so I'm reluctant to provide a clue at this early stage. After all it's already narrowed down to a single volume of The Lord of the Rings; how much more of a hint do you need? :smokin:

Son of Númenor 06-29-2004 11:36 AM

Quote:

But Arvedui did not take his counsel. He thanked him, and at parting gave him his ring, saying: "This is a thing of worth beyond your reckoning. For its ancientry alone. It has no power, save the esteem in which those hold it who love my house. It will not help you, but if ever you are in need, my kin will ransom it with great store of all that you desire."(emphasis mine)
It is from Appendix A, specifically The North-kingdom and the Dúnedain.

The Squatter of Amon Rûdh 06-29-2004 12:09 PM

Appendixitis

Spot on. See? It wasn't as hard as all that really.

Son of Númenor 06-29-2004 12:17 PM

An acute case

Who said it, and in reference to what?

bump

Guinevere 08-27-2004 11:54 AM

Thorin said this to Gandalf, referring to his halls (In the Appendix)

Sleepy Ranger 09-02-2004 02:11 PM

bump back at ya

rutslegolas 09-02-2004 11:40 PM

Where are you bump(Son of Numenor)??

Son of Númenor 09-12-2004 08:22 AM

Sorry for the delay - this is actually the first time I've peaked my head in the Quotable Quotes forum in weeks.

Guinevere, you've got it. :)

Guinevere 09-12-2004 09:32 AM

Thanks!
Quote:

Alas! Then I have guessed rightly.

Son of Númenor 09-12-2004 09:43 AM

Alas!

Sorry to start a 'back-and-forth' affair, but I recognized this one instantly; it is Gandalf, speaking about his guess that Denethor was in possession of a palantír.

Has anyone else noticed how often the word 'alas' appears in Lord of the Rings dialogues?

Guinevere 09-21-2004 01:23 PM

Oops, I nearly forgot this thread, sorry! :(
Of course your answer is correct, Son of Númenor! :)
And, yes, I've noticed the many instances of "Alas!" as well, and I do like this word! It is not used in every day English anymore, is it?

Son of Númenor 09-21-2004 01:31 PM

Alas, no. :p

I always found this line from Rotk particularly funny:
Quote:

He does not want them to be.

rutslegolas 09-26-2004 12:24 AM

Gandalf to Aragorn??

Son of Númenor 09-26-2004 06:57 PM

'Fraid not.

Sleepy Ranger 10-29-2004 11:26 AM

Revival of the quotes

I found this quote in TTT but not in RotK, how about a hint?

Son of Númenor 10-29-2004 12:53 PM

Apologies

The quote is from TTT. That'll teach me to use an online version of Lord of the Rings.

I yield the floor.

Sapphire_Flame 11-08-2004 06:59 PM

If the floor is open, then I will continue:

"It is there that the first blow will fall."

Far too easy, I imagine. But something is better than nothing. ;)

Abedithon le,

rutslegolas 11-09-2004 11:50 PM

Gandalf to Aragorn ( or Pippin ? )

Sapphire_Flame 11-17-2004 09:14 AM

luthien-elvenprincess 11-17-2004 06:17 PM

Denethor said this to Faramir.

Sapphire_Flame 11-17-2004 06:33 PM

Ah, huzzah to ye, luthien! That is correct. :D

You may proceed.

Sleepy Ranger 04-15-2005 09:54 AM

Wow, Its quiet here...

Where is everybody? The floors open. Whoever wants may give the question.
HINT- Its not going to be me. :p

I hope that your question will be harder :D

Sleepy Ranger 09-25-2005 12:08 PM

This time I mean to stay... and with any luck I will...
