ok, hint:
Look at a map of ME... the places should make a recognizable path. The reaching arm is figurative, the map should help. In one place there's a slight backtrack, due to rhyme... (somewhere around the watertown). The Mountain Grim is the head atop the spine, the place you're led is a specific feature, not a wide area (eg, a named mountain or valley). Argh, this isn't a very good question, sorry guys . Sophia |
Wait are we in the third age or could we be in the first age?
The Sea of Nurnen (The inland sea) Bar-adur (The reaching arm) Morannon (The Gates of Stone) Lake-town (The Water-Town) Thranduil's caves in Mirkwood (The elfking's Halls) The Enchanted River or are we back to Esgorgoth(The Water Dim) Iron Hills(The hills of Stone) Eberor(The Mountain Grim) and thats the far as I get. And I at all close. |
Perhaps you could let us know, Sophia, how much of the quesion we have guessed rightly so far?
|
OK I've puzzled over this for some time now and stared endlessly at maps of ME, and this is still all that I can come up with:
The inland sea, - Start at the Sea of Rhun The reaching arm, - Follow the course of the River Running The Gates of Stone, - To the Gates of Erebor The Water-Town, - Back past Lake-Town The Elfking's Halls, - Follow the Forest River past Thranduil's Palace The Water Dim, - And past the Enchanted River The hills of Stone, - To Ered Mithrin, the Grey Mountains The Mountain Grim, - Arriving at Mount Gundabad Atop the spine, I am the head, but followed down, - Follow the Mountains of Angmar Where am I led? To Carn Dum? So, is it Carn Dum? |
Saucepan, you're amazing. *bows*
That's perfect. Just as I was berating myself for setting an impossible question. Sophia |
Great question, Sophia.
In fact, so good that I'm going to 'borrow' your format for the next one. Your journey starts at the war-torn front, A fortress built to bear the brunt; Follow the course of the diminutive one, Joining her sister whose journey is long; Turn off at the crossing of many stones; Across the land where the first made their homes; Then follow the water that falls, on your right You will see the vale of twilight light; And then you will find you are back where you started, Now standing alone, all companions departed. Like Sophia's question, the rhyme describes a journey. I'm looking for the start/finish point and each of the places/features that make up the journey. |
If I win, I'll do something different .
Start at the Pellenor Fields around Minas Tirith -- 'War-torn front' Past Minas Tirith -- 'fortress... to bear the brunt' Following the small river Erui -- 'diminutive one' Join the Anduin -- 'sister whose course is long' Turn around at Pelargir -- 'crossing of stones, where the first made their homes' Follow the Anduin back up again past Rauros -- 'water that falls on your right' Until you reeach the river Limlight -- 'vale of twilight light' Er, take a boat back down Anduin and get off at Osgiliath again. Ta-da -- no I don't think this is entirely right somehow. |
Nope, Gwaihir, that's not it I'm afraid. If you follow the route, it will definately take you back to your starting point.
|
Alright Saucepan, I can't make this work quite to my satisfaction, but I'll give it a shot, in the hopes that you'll tell me I'm in the right area .
Your journey starts at the war-torn front, A fortress built to bear the brunt;- Himring which guarded the March of Maedhros Follow the course of the diminutive one,- Little Gelion Joining her sister whose journey is long;- Greater Gelion Turn off at the crossing of many stones;- Sarn Athrad Across the land where the first made their homes;- this is where things get sticky. I find myself in Nan Emloth, which is possibly where the first of the Sindar (Elwe and Melian) met, but I really want to say Ladros, where the first house of the Edain dwelt... in the right vicinity, but it doesn't quite work. Then follow the water that falls, on your right- follow Celon upstream You will see the vale of twilight light;- Couldn't find that one And then you will find you are back where you started, Now standing alone, all companions departed.- the source of the Celon is near Himring... Missing a few links, but am I near? |
Well, I think you should have it Sophia as you got the right route and almost all of the locations. The missing ones were:
Across the land where the first made their homes; - Across Estolad, where the first of the Edain to come to Beleriand settled. You will see the vale of twilight light; - This was Nan-Elmoth, meaning Star-Dusk Valley, which you pass on your right as you follow the Celon upstream. Please proceed. |
Hmm I can see I'm going to have to pore over a few maps before I try to answer one of these again.
|
Frozen in time, the solid water;
Lost a wife and kept a daughter. Along the shore a journey long, But settled now, near ocean song; I dare not stay, must safety find, Yet still I linger, where am I? |
I believe you are in Vinyamar, and that you are Turgon son of Fingolfin. The 'solid water' is the Helcaraxe; Turgon did lose his wife, although his daughter survived, in this crossing; they marched along the shore to get there; built Vinyamar, near the sea, although they soon had to leave for Gondolin and safety.
|
That is it indeed, Gwaihir!
|
Ah, how satisfying. *cracks knuckles* Ok, a short riddle; try and guess the place from it.
Water crashing endlessly Dark shores that huddle under; That bears a lightless memory That once set of the Valar's thunder. Tell me if it's too hard and I'll give you a clue ok? I believe I've made it do-able, but then I never am a very good judge of this. |
Cuivienen.
Water crashing endlessly Dark shores that huddle under; (The star lit bay) That bears a lightless memory That once set of the Valar's thunder. (Orome) |
Good thinking, lindo, I think I'll give it to you. The other answer I would have accepted is Avathar; the darkness coming from Ungoliant's inhabitance there, and the thunder of the feet Tulkas in the hunt for the fugitive Morgoth the answer to the last line.
But, as Cuivenen is equally viable here, you may proceed. [ August 02, 2003: Message edited by: Gwaihir the Windlord ] |

Excellent answer Lindo.

That's right, please continue.
|
