being covered with me can make one wet!

No, Hírilamara, but a good guess. BTW, welcome to the riddle thread and the 'Downs.

Sam?

Gimli Son Of Gloin 05-26-2002 11:43 PM

Fog?

Sam?
Yes?
No, Mister Gimli, sir--not fog, either. http://www.plauder-smilies.de/rolleyes.gif

rainclouds?

Samwise 05-27-2002 09:42 PM

Nope, not rain clouds. You're all on the right track, though.

There the white rind of the New Moon could be seen glimmering on the remote lakes. Sam looked at it, and puckered his brows.

Is it fear?

Tigerlily Gamgee 05-28-2002 10:56 AM

Samwise, is it snow??? I have just heard the phrase "a blanket of snow" before, so that is what came to mind.

Yes, Tigerlily! It is indeed snow!

"I don't like this at all," panted Sam just behind. "Snow's all right on a fine morning, but I like to be in bed while it's falling. I wish this lot would go off to Hobbiton. Folk might welcome it there. "

Kettle of fish 05-29-2002 06:30 AM

How brilliant!

Tigerlily Gamgee 05-29-2002 01:44 PM

Whoo-hoo! Oh how happy that makes me that I actually got one right on my first try!!!!!

Susan Delgado 06-09-2002 05:58 PM

Tigerlily's right: these threads are too much fun just to let them die...

Iron roof, glass walls.
Burns and burns and never falls.

Gandalf_theGrey 06-10-2002 09:01 AM

My guess would be a lantern.

Susan Delgado 06-11-2002 01:16 AM

Correct, oh Esteemed One

Gandalf_theGrey 06-11-2002 09:47 AM

* bows an introductory greeting to Susan Delgado * Hail and Well Met.

Here then is the next riddle:

I draw curious shapes in the air
Oliphaunts, sailing ships gleaming fair.
But when you find me on the ground
I'm blinding, formless, muffling sound.

Mist/Clouds? just a guess...

Gandalf_theGrey 06-11-2002 09:56 AM

Yes, you're correct Veritas ...

There's as much truth in your guess as in your name!

piosenniel 06-11-2002 10:07 AM

Come, Elves, and answer this old riddle:

At night they come without being fetched,
And by day they are lost without being stolen.

Gandalf_theGrey 06-11-2002 10:09 AM

An easy one, piosenniel.

However, as I am not an Elf, I shall abstain as you wish. * bows *

piosenniel 06-11-2002 11:24 AM

Here is one for you, Olňrin :

I never was, am always to be,
No one ever saw me, nor ever will
And yet I am the confidence of all
Who live and breathe in Middle Earth.

& may all of yours be glad ones!

Gandalf_theGrey 06-11-2002 01:34 PM

Ah, Good piosenniel!

But I have already answered this same riddle within the past 24 hours elsewhere in Arda ... what a coincidence, this!

How about if I answer your question ... tomorrow?

Mithrandir -

I desire greatly your input on this riddle which has turned and twisted in my mind over the years:

Why is a Raven like a writing desk?

Now, some say this is unanswerable, but I have come to some opinion on it, and would like to hear yours and all others who might venture a guess.

Susan Delgado 06-15-2002 01:15 AM

I still think you've got it, piosennial

Bragolandune 06-17-2002 03:40 PM

here's a cool riddle for you all, its kinda long but its worth it:

'Twas in heaven pronounced, and 'twas muttered in hell,
An echo caught faintly the sound as it fell;
On the confines of earth 'twas permitted to rest,
And the depths of the ocean its presence confessed;
'Twill be found in the sphere when 'tis riven asunder,
Be seen in the lightning and heard in the thunder.
'Twas allotted to man with his earliest breath,
Attends him at birth, and awaits him in death,
Presides o'er his happiness, honor, and health,
Is the prop of his house, and the end of his wealth.
In the heaps of the miser 'tis hoarded with care,
But is sure to be lost on the prodigal heir.
It begins every hope, every wish it must bound,
With the husbandman toils, and with monarchs is crowned.
Without it the soldier, the seaman may roam,
But woe to the wretch who expels it from home!
In the whispers of conscience its voice will be found,
Nor e'en in the whirlwind of passion be drowned.
'Twill not soften the heart; but though deaf be the ear,
It will make it acutely and instantly hear.
Yet in shade let it rest, like a delicate flower,
Ah... breathe on it softly, - it dies in an hour.

Raefindel 06-17-2002 07:41 PM

Has anyone answered this one yet?
Quote:

At night they come without being fetched,
And by day they are lost without being stolen
My guess is "stars".

And a few brain teasers, though not true riddles, I have for you.

Why do we park on driveways and drive on parkways?

Why do they call them apartments when they are all stuck together?

Tigerlily Gamgee 06-18-2002 02:02 PM

<font color=gold>Wow, Bragolandune, that's some riddle! My guesses are these... innocence, faith, humility

Lady_Báin 06-19-2002 10:37 AM

Rae is yours beacause if it were any different we would all have big holes in our garages?

Lady_Báin 06-19-2002 10:41 AM

hey what say you all if we all decided to move to one thread or the other? Because i have noticed that it's generally the same people that post on both or shall we start all over again? just a sudjestion because 10 pages is alot and yeah maybe we can start over??

Bragolandune 06-19-2002 10:49 AM

Tigerlily..the answer to it is none of those three guesses..its more a play on words than an actual answer.

Susan Delgado 06-19-2002 09:30 PM

Lady Bain, I believe either the Quiz Room or Middle Earth Mayhem would be a better place for both these threads. I'm not sure it's really meet to start a whole new one, though. Do we really need four riddle threads going at once?

Lady_Báin 06-20-2002 03:19 AM

i mean we could let the present ones retire and start up a new one because having two is a bit confusing.

Hey look I'm a wight!!!

Lady_Báin 06-20-2002 03:27 AM

Bragolandune- is it time?

Susan Delgado 06-20-2002 11:17 AM

All right, let's take a vote.

How does everyone feel about Lady Bain's suggestion to retire these two riddle threads and start up a new one either in Middle Earth Mayhem or the Quiz Room?

I'll post this in Starbreeze's Challange as well.

Congrats on being a Wight, by the way

I believe she has a point. Two threads are confusing sometimes, not to mention the fact that they're both getting a little long. Also, if we do decide to move, I think it should be to ME Mayhem so as not to interfere with the third riddle thread in the Quiz Room.

Bragolandune 06-20-2002 11:54 AM

I think its a great idea as well, these threads do get a bit confusing.
also, to Lady_Bain, the answer is not time.

The Perky Ent 09-08-2004 04:52 PM

This looks very interesting. Saucepan, can you move this to The Quiz Room, where we can further pursue it?

The Saucepan Man 09-08-2004 05:38 PM

We already have a riddle game there:

Riddles in the Downs

And, indeed, you were the last to post on it, Perky. :p :D
