This is driving me up a tree... I don't even want to make a guess cos I'll be completely wrong...every guess i would have made has been used...good job in stumping...EVERYONE lathspell (now someone smarter than me PLEASE figure this out for the sake of all humanity!)

Aldor? nearly becomes a doll(just one letter off...) he lived long (101 years) but there was a longer time after that that he wasn't alive and his descendants ruled Rohan?
Sheesh... I don't think I'm right, but I'm out of ideas Great riddle lathspell, if a little hard Sophia |
Hehe, thank you for those nice compliments
Sorry, Sophia, Aldor is not the answer I'm hoping to get. I think it is time to add some lines, here is the whole riddle with the lines. Man of great reknown, and eldest of them all. I lived long, but 'unlived' longer, I nearly became a doll! I left a fortune to my heir. I make things reflect things not quite there! Hope that helps! Greetings, lathspell |
Is it Bilbo?
|
Durin the Deathless?
|
Is it Beren?
He was certainly a man of great reknown. He was of Beor's House (my earlier answer). He lived for a long time after he returned from the dead and availed himself of magic several times in order to be disguised. He also left heirlooms to his heirs. The doll part I can only fit with Dol Baran....which is nearly Beren [ April 28, 2003: Message edited by: Eruanna ] |
I think it's Durin, though that's been guessed already (before this time with Annun). But the description of reflecting things that aren't uite there sounds a whole lot like Mirrormere and its crown of stars.
Sophia |
I'm feeling rather stupid now, for it is indeed Durin the Deathless. I've read over the answer of Lyra Greenleaf the whole time.
My deepest regrets lathspell P.S.: Lyra Greenleaf should get the answer after all, i guess. |

Ummmm. Is there some 10 day thing where if nobody has posted for 10 days anyone can just post a riddle? I don't have one, but I've been missing this thread and was just wondering...
|
Yes, there is.
Anyone can now go! |
i'll go
Though deceived i was with the oen who arises in might dominince, i was allowed to re-plead my allegiance and protect the wave of freedom. Who am i? |
For some reason , the word "wave" makes me think of Boromir.
And it could fit - he was deceived by Sauron's spirit within the One Ring, but redeemed himself in his last stand trying to protect Merry and Pippin. |
Osse... it says somewhere (though I can't remember where) that Osse was tempted by Melkor, but returned to Ulmo and afterward was restrained by the influence of his wife, Uinen. He would protect lots of waves methinks.
Sophia |
Sauron? He was corrupted by Melkor and afterwards he had to leave his body for the wave that came to Numenor.
Hmm... I think you are correct, Sophia |
Sophia is correct good job
|
Though I was not old I seemed so from my beginning.
I walked beneath the world, forging a path for grey shadowed followers. But in the end it was the match of either that finished me. |
Is it Baldor, who ventured down the Paths of the Dead never to return, and whose path was followed many many years later by the Grey Company?
|
So it is... *sighs heavily* Cryptic is not my gift.
Sophia |
Hehe ... another cryptic offering, but quite an easy one, I hope ...
I am a Watcher. A Prince. Followed by Billy, Accompanied by a Page. Who am I? |
OK, I am really bad at interpreting (correctly) cryptic things. But we'll venture a guess. Sam?
|
merry becasue he is the heir to Buckland and Pippin was a page to Theoden and Billy there horse followed hi on his journey

Nope and nope.
|
Legolas? (That devil smilie is very unnerving!)
|
Ok, I´d say PIPPIN
I am a Watcher.- He was a guard in Minas Tirith, and they WATCH A Prince.- not really, but hobbit nobility Followed by Billy,- either Bill the Pony, or Billy Boyd! Accompanied by a Page.- Merry, Page to Theoden Sheesh, it´s been a long time! EDIT: Ok, aragornerebor, I´m almost sure you´re right! [ May 15, 2003: Message edited by: Manardariel ] |
Yes, aragrornreborn is correct - the devil smile is very unnerving.
But the answer is neither Legolas nor Pippin. |
If we're thinking a member of the fellowship because of the Billy part, then why didn't the rest of you think of Aragorn too? Watcher automaticly make ME think Dunadain.
So you all have very strange minds /jk. Although in truth they are probably not as strange as mine. At least people keep telling me it's strange and I think they are probably right, but who can judge their own thoughts well, and if you can't judge your own thoughts who can? |
No, not Aragorn. Nor, indeed, any member of the Fellowship.
|
Saruman of many colours!
|
No, not Saruman.
The first line is a clue to the character. The next three comprise a pretty straightforward cryptic clue. |
Bard? (that is his name right? The person I'm thinking of. Sorry, it's late) Perhaps? Maybe?

What's a burrahobbit got to do with my pocket anyway?
Are you a stoned troll? |
No, neither Bard nor a Troll (intoxicated or otherwise) am I.
Think of an alternative to Prince Billypage ... [ May 20, 2003: Message edited by: The Saucepan Man ] |
Wild guess, that is probably wrong, but what about Glorfindel? After all he was at least an elvish lord, and he often watched the roads leading to Rivendale. I don't know about a Billy, but I do know he often traveled with a page to send his messages quickly.
|
Harry Goatleaf!
He was the gatekeeper in Bree, hence WATCHER. A famous PRINCE is Harry, although William gets more pics in swoon magazines *gag*. Goat is the only thing that is regularly paired with BILLY that I can think of, and a leaf in a book is a synonym for PAGE. That was a pretty straightforward cryptic clue, Saucy, once I thought of it right . Sophia |
You are correct in every detail, Sophia. Please proceed.
|
Alright, here goes:
I chose my own destruction. Alas, my namesake would have served me better. Sophia |
Are you Denethor, Steward of Gondor, who chose self-immolation, whereas his namesake, Denethor of Ossiriand, met a far more valiant end?
|
Nope .
|
Total guess:
Sauronman I don't know about the namesake though, so I'm pretty sure I'm wrong, but I just had to try. |
